Support from TÜBİTAK to ETÜ's Project

The project developed for spinal cord treatment in Erzurum Technical University (ETÜ) laboratories was entitled to receive support from TÜBİTAK.

Res. Res., one of the faculty members of ETÜ Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. See. Fahri Murat, faculty member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Dr. İrfan Kaymaz's advisor is Associate Professor of the Faculty of Science, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. Dr. The project titled "A New Porous Structured Spinal Implant Design with Topology Optimization Considering Additive Manufacturing Criteria", in which Elanur Aydın Karataş participated as a researcher, was supported within the scope of TÜBİTAK Rapid Support Program 1002.

Making statements about the developed project, project manager Res. See. Fahri Murat stated that additive manufacturing (AM) and topology optimization techniques were used in the design of spinal implants in the project and said: “Spinal implants are critical medical devices widely used in orthopedic surgical procedures. However, critical factors such as biomechanical compatibility and optimized material use must be considered in the design of these implants. The focus of this study is that the external structure of spinal implants is designed in an optimum topology and the internal structure is porous. Porous designs can increase long-term implant stability by promoting bone growth. Additionally, due to the complexities of implants produced with AM technology, the use of topology optimization can help optimize the mechanical performance of the design and improve material utilization. "We believe that the results of this study have significant potential for improving spinal implant design and achieving better patient outcomes."
