Sezai Karakoç Commemorated at ETU

“Resurrection Edibi Sezai Karakoç” Conference was held in cooperation with Erzurum Technical University (ETU) Faculty of Letters and Turkology Club, one of the student societies.

ETU Rector Prof. Dr. Bülent Çakmak, Dean of the Faculty of Letters Prof. Dr. Murat Kacıroğlu, academics and many students attended.

prof. Dr. Rector Bülent Çakmak, who took the podium to make the opening speech of the program held at the Muammer Yaylalı Conference Hall, expressed that he cares and supports students to engage in various club activities during their university education: I think it adds value. With such events, our young friends' ability to organize and the culture of working together improve significantly. In this sense, I believe that the experience and experiences they have gained here will have very important reflections when they graduate and start working life. Today we will talk about Sezai Karakoç, one of the most important names and personalities of our literature. We will listen to the speakers with great attention and care. In this sense, I would like to thank our teachers and students who contributed to the organization of the program, and I greet you all with respect.”

After Rector Çakmak's speech, Nisanur Tahtacı, a 3rd year student at the Faculty of Letters, Department of Turkish Language and Literature, read the poems of Sezai Karakoç, followed by Dean Murat Kacıroğlu and Dr. Instructor Member Caner Solak shared information and anecdotes about Karakoç's world of thought.

Stating that Sezai Karakoç is a thinker as well as being a poet, story writer and essayist, Kacıroğlu said, “Sezai Karakoç has a systematic conception of civilization that he calls resurrection. He has integrated this thought system into this world of thought, in which he weaves knot by knot in almost every writing, and has made it a world view. The concept of resurrection, which can be conceptually associated with extinction, means the resurrection of something. In other words, this idea should be considered in the context of resurrecting something that has been lost or destroyed, but also resurrecting it while being resurrected. While Sezai Karakoç was developing this mentality, he set out from a basic determination in Ottoman Turkish thought and Turkish modernization. At the root of this determination is a civilizational crisis. The idea of civilization crisis is a concept that is frequently encountered in our recent history of thought. Turkish intellectuals have faced this crisis directly or indirectly since the repression. Sezai Karakoç is also one of the rare people who struggled with this crisis and came out of it successfully.”

Dr. Instructor Caner Solak, on the other hand, focused on the storytelling aspect of Sezai Karakoç, who is a prominent thinker and poet, in his speech titled Sezai Karakoç's storytelling in the light of Todorov's Fantastic Theory. He evaluated the fantastic elements in Karakoç's stories.

After the question and answer session, the program ended with Rector Çakmak presenting a certificate of appreciation to the speakers.
