Awareness on Violence Against Women Highlighted at ETÜ

Gender Equality and Violence Against Women Seminar Held at Erzurum Technical University

As part of the "International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women" events, a seminar was organized by the ETU Women's Studies Application and Research Center (EKAUM) on November 25. The event, held in the Prof. Dr. Muammer Yaylalı Conference Hall, aimed to raise awareness about violence against women and promote a sense of responsibility.

The seminar was attended by ETU Rector Prof. Dr. Bulent Cakmak, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Ali Fatih Yetim, Prof. Dr. Ceren Sultan Elmalı, Prof. Dr. Naim Urkmez, Faculty of Letters Dean Prof. Dr. Ugur Akbulut, Faculty of Sports Sciences Dean Birol Soysal, numerous male academics, and students.

In his opening speech, Rector Cakmak emphasized that violence against women is a reflection of broader social issues, stating:
"Femicide in our country remains a harsh reality. Each year, hundreds of women lose their lives, often at the hands of those they trust most. These heinous acts are not only attacks on individuals' right to life but also violations of society's conscience, sense of justice, and shared values. To end femicide, we must adopt a determined stance at every level. The underlying causes—gender inequality, discriminatory attitudes, economic dependency, and cultural norms that perpetuate violence—are constructs created by society and can be dismantled through collective effort."

He further underscored the critical role of men in combating gender-based violence:
"This issue is too significant to be borne solely by women. Men must not only support this struggle but actively participate in it. Challenging societal norms, stereotypes, and discriminatory behaviors that sustain violence is a responsibility for everyone. Choosing to be part of the solution, both individually and socially, is crucial for this transformation. I firmly believe that we can work together toward a future where equality, justice, and human dignity prevail."

Following the Rector’s address, Associate Professor Dr. Burak Bashkan, Coordinator of Community Engagement and Equality Policies, provided insights on gender equality. Meanwhile, Research Assistant Adem Kantar from the Psychology Department discussed violence, its types, and the concept of fragile masculinity syndrome.

The seminar concluded with a certificate of appreciation presented to the speakers by EKAUM Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahtinur Mongu.
