The works, life and literary identity of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, the master writer of Turkish Literature, will be discussed in the symposium organized under the leadership of ETÜ Faculty of Letters Department of Turkish Language and Literature and the Turkology Club, one of the student groups, and in partnership with Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality, Yakutiye Municipality and Uzundere Municipality.
Prof. Dr. The opening session of the symposium held at Muammer Yaylalı Conference Hall was attended by Erzurum Deputy Governor Ahmet Özdemir, Yakutiye Mayor Dr. Mahmut Uçar, ETÜ Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Fatih Yetim, Erzurum Provincial Director of National Education Yakup Yıldız, Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Advisor Hüseyin Koçan, academicians and many students attended.
Head of Department of Turkish Language and Literature, Prof., came to the podium to make the opening speech of the symposium, which started with the reading of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's poems after a moment of silence and the reading of the National Anthem. Dr. Yusuf Ziya Sümbüllü stated that the symposium is very important in terms of raising awareness about Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar and said: “Tanpınar has the identity of a modern traveler. In his well-known work titled Five Cities, he devoted the most space to Erzurum after Istanbul. He often mentions Evliya Çelebi in his work. In this sense, we see Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar as a modern Çelebi. As you know, Tanpınar is a very important writer who worked at Erzurum High School and whom we can truly call our fellow countryman. In this regard, we tried to bring together our professors whose names are mentioned with their scientific studies on Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar in Turkey, in the symposium we organized. "On this occasion, I would like to thank everyone who contributed materially and morally to the organization of the symposium and wish our work to be beneficial," he said.
Prof. Dr. Dean of the Faculty of Letters, Prof. took the podium after Sümbüllü. Dr. Uğur Akbulut stated that they were very happy to be talking about Ahmet Hamdi in Erzurum, which is prosperous, modern and a university city today, instead of Erzurum, which Tanpınar described as ruined, ruined and poor 100 years ago.
Lastly speaking, Yakutiye Mayor Dr. Mahmut Uçar emphasized that Tanpınar's perspective on people and culture is remarkable, and stated that in his essay Five Cities, it is a valuable source in terms of urbanism as well as literature.
The symposium will continue for two days and many topics such as Tanpınar's Erzurum Years, the language he used in his works and his philosophical approach will be discussed by academics in 4 different sessions.
