Panel Discussion on ‘Traces of Violence Against Women’ Held in Partnership with ETU

Erzurum Technical University (ETU), Atatürk University and the Erzurum Provincial
Directorate of Family and Social Services jointly organised a panel discussion entitled "Traces
of Violence Against Women" on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of
Violence Against Women.
The programme, held under the slogan "Raise Your Voice Against Violence" to draw
attention to incidents of violence against women, increase social awareness and raise
awareness, was attended by ETU Rector Prof. Dr. Bülent Çakmak, Erzurum Provincial
Director of Family and Social Services Hasan Aykut, academics and a large number of
students.
Speaking at the opening of the programme hosted by Atatürk University, ETU Rector Prof.
Dr. Bülent Çakmak emphasised that violence against women is a multi-dimensional issue:
"Violence against women is not merely an individual problem or a matter of concern only to
certain sectors; it is an issue that affects the entirety of social life and requires inter-
institutional coordination and shared responsibility. Therefore, it is extremely valuable that
different perspectives and areas of expertise are coming together here today." As
educational institutions and public organisations, we share a common goal of strengthening
social welfare. This goal is based on the ideal of a society that respects human dignity and
upholds the principles of equality and justice. The work we are carrying out today, the
awareness we are raising and the partnerships we are developing aim to contribute to long-
term efforts to prevent violence. I believe that the assessments to be discussed during the
panel will both increase individual awareness and shed light on the future work of our
institutions. Our university remains committed to contributing to the development of a
culture of life where every individual feels safe, equal and valued. Similarly, the work carried
out by our partners highlights the importance of social solidarity and coordination. On this
occasion, I would like to thank all partner institutions, panellists and guests who contributed
to this organisation, and I hope that the panel will create a productive, constructive and
enlightening environment."
Following the opening speeches, a panel discussion moderated by ETU Women and Family
Studies Application and Research Centre Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahtınur Möngü took
place. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Gürol, Prof. Dr. Elif Küçük Durur and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Karakuş Umar
gave presentations addressing different dimensions of violence against women.
In the final segment of the programme, academics shared their solution-oriented
recommendations by evaluating the social, legal and media dimensions of violence against
women.
