TÜBİTAK Supports New Molecule Project for Lung and Colorectal Cancer Research Developed in ETU Laboratories

A project titled “Potential Bioactive Benzyl Ureas: Synthesis, Characterization, and
Investigation of Their Biological Activities,” conducted by Associate Professor Bünyamin
Özgeriş, a faculty member at the Department of Basic Sciences within the Faculty of Science
at Erzurum Technical University (ETU), has been awarded support under the TÜBİTAK
1002-A Scientific and Technological Research Projects Support Program.
The project aims to develop next-generation biologically active molecules targeting lung and
colorectal cancers, which are among the diseases with the highest mortality rates worldwide.
Commenting on the project, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bünyamin Özgeriş stated that the research is
expected to provide significant outcomes in the development of new molecules with
multifunctional biological effects.
“In this project, we aim not only to develop novel compounds with strong anticancer
properties, but also to obtain molecules with low toxicity that can suppress oxidative stress
and act effectively against pathogenic microorganisms. The major disadvantages of current
chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments — including severe toxicity, drug resistance,
increased oxidative stress, and susceptibility to infections — make the development of new
drug candidates with multifunctional biological properties even more important. We believe
that the findings obtained through this research will contribute to a better understanding of
structure–activity relationships and provide an important scientific foundation for the future
development of next-generation therapeutic drug candidates,” he said.
