Erzurum Technical University (ETU) hosted the 21st International Geometry Symposium this year.

Erzurum Technical University (ETU) hosted the 21st International Geometry Symposium this year.

The 21st symposium, which aims to develop, understand and popularize the science of geometry, was held this year in honor of Prof. Dr. Arif Salimov.

Speaking at the opening of the symposium, held in the Conference Hall of the Faculty of Science, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sibel Turanlı, faculty member of the Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Science at ETÜ and chair of the symposium, stated her belief that the symposium would make significant contributions to the field of geometry, saying, “The implementation and sustainability of an international symposium requires dedicated and collective effort. In this context, I would like to express my respect and gratitude in your presence to Prof. Dr. Hilmi Hacısalihoğlu, Honorary President of the Union of Turkish World Mathematicians, who pioneered the initiation and ongoing implementation of the Geometry Symposium in our country and has contributed directly or indirectly through his students to the establishment and development of mathematics departments at many universities in Turkey. He was unable to be with us due to health issues. I hope that the scientific studies presented at this symposium will make valuable contributions to our field and yield productive results in the scientific world.”

Following Assoc. Prof. Dr. Turanlı, Turkish Geometry Association President Prof. Dr. Murat Tosun took the podium, expressing his pleasure at the symposium being held in Erzurum. He said, “We are deeply honored to be holding the International Geometry Symposium in Erzurum, where the seeds of the national struggle were sown. I would like to thank Erzurum Technical University Rector Prof. Dr. Bülent Çakmak, as well as Sibel, our esteemed department head, and the faculty members. Sibel suggested organizing this year's congress in memory of her own teacher, Prof. Dr. Arif Salimov. There is a beautiful saying from Rumi: ‘He who is disloyal cannot be disloyal to God.’” I also thank you for keeping the feeling of loyalty alive through this symposium, rather than just a district name. The first geometry conference began 23 years ago at Fırat University. Since then, despite the challenges, it has continued. Although we had to take a two-year break due to reasons such as the pandemic and earthquake, we are gathered here today. Hopefully, we will reach many more 20 years together with the dedicated efforts of our young colleagues. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the symposium and offer my love and respect.

The symposium, where 82 local and foreign scientists and many students exchanged information by sharing current research in the field of geometry, was concluded with a total of 59 presentations, 30 face-to-face and 29 online.
