Erzurum’s hosting of the 2028 European Universities Winter Games was officially confirmed at a signing ceremony held in Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia.
At the ceremony organized by the European University Sports Association, prominent representatives from Türkiye universities and sports federations were present.
Among those attending were Prof. Dr. Bülent Çakmak, Rector of Erzurum Technical University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu, Rector of Atatürk University, and Prof. Dr. Mutlu Türkmen, President of the Türkiye University Sports Federation.
The European Universities Winter Games will be held in 2028 in Erzurum, hosting a large number of athletes from across Europe. Within the scope of the event, university athletes will compete in various disciplines, elevating the level of sporting competition while also contributing to intercultural exchange.
Rector Çakmak: “Erzurum has a strong organizational background”
Speaking at the signing ceremony, ETU Rector Prof. Dr. Bülent Çakmak stated that Erzurum’s past experience in sports and organizational capability are among the most important references for this process. He emphasized that Erzurum has proven its competence through previous large-scale international events and has become a reliable hub in the international sports community thanks to its suitable natural conditions for winter sports, modern facilities, and strong institutional coordination capacity.

Atatürk University Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hacımüftüoğlu described Erzurum’s selec%MCEPASTEBIN%%MCEPASTEBIN%tion as a source of great pride, noting that the achievement is the result of joint efforts by universities, local authorities, and the Turkish University Sports Federation. He also highlighted that Erzurum gained significant experience through the 2011 Winter Universiade and is fully prepared in terms of organizational capacity.

President of the Turkish University Sports Federation Prof. Dr. Mutlu Türkmen emphasized that the process is the outcome of strong cooperation and shared determination. He stated that Türkiye has reached a significant international position in university sports and that the organization will provide a major opportunity for young athletes while enhancing Türkiye’s international visibility.
