The final report of the Eastern Front Historical Sites Workshop, organised in collaboration
with Erzurum Technical University, Erzurum Governorate and Erzurum Metropolitan
Municipality, has been completed and submitted to Erzurum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi.
The final report of the Eastern Front Historical Sites Workshop, organised in collaboration
with Erzurum Technical University (ETU), the Erzurum Governor's Office and Erzurum
Metropolitan Municipality, has been completed.
Following the workshop, reports containing the assessments of participating institutions and
units on the subject were reviewed by the Scientific Committee of the Eastern Front
Historical Areas Workshop established within ETU and finalised into a final report. Prepared
based on scientific and objective criteria, the report contains important findings and
recommendations for the preservation of Erzurum's historical heritage and the
establishment of a sustainable management model.
Evaluation reports prepared by Gelibolu Historical Area Director İsmail Kaşdemir, Erzurum
Deputy Governor Ahmet Özdemir, ETU Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Naim Urkmez, Scientific
Committee Chairman Prof. Dr. Murat Küçükuğurlu, along with academics from various
universities, public institutions and historical area managers, made significant contributions
to the preparation of the final report.
The final report was presented to Erzurum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi by ETU Rector Prof. Dr.
Bulent Çakmak and Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Naim Urkmez. Rector Çakmak stated that the report
aimed to analyse the current state of the fortresses and martyrdom sites in Erzurum, remove
obstacles to their preservation, and establish a sound legal framework for bringing these
historical areas under a single administrative umbrella.
Rector Çakmak stated that the main objectives of the final report were, on the one hand, to
ensure the effective preservation of historical artefacts and, on the other hand, to contribute
to the regional economy. He emphasised that a management model specific to Erzurum's
current conditions had been developed in line with these objectives. It was noted that the
structure, initially planned to cover the forts and martyrdom sites within the borders of
Erzurum, would be expanded in the future to encompass the entire region historically known
as the "Eastern Front".
Erzurum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi, in his assessment of the matter, stated that it was of great
importance to address the historical sites of the Eastern Front in light of scientific data.
Governor Çiftçi stated that the final report would make important contributions to the
preservation of Erzurum's historical heritage, its transmission to future generations, and the
sustainable management of these areas. He thanked the institutions and academics who
contributed to the preparation of the report.
The final report is expected to be presented to Erzurum Metropolitan Mayor Mehmet
Sekmen in the coming days, followed by a meeting with Erzurum MPs and relevant
institutions and authorities to determine the roadmap for the process.
