The ETU-Developed "High Strength TiNi/MAX Compact Coatings with Honeycomb Pattern" * Was Patented and Registered.

Obtaining a patent allowed Prof. Dr. Hikmet Cicek of Erzurum Technical University's Mechanical Engineering Department akademic staff and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Hakkı Korkmaz and Prof. Dr. Ihsan Efeoglu of Ataturk University's Mechanical Engineering Department to register their work on the "High Strength TiNi/MAX Compact Coatings with Honeycomb Pattern" developed as part of the TUBITAK-1001 project.

The topic was evaluated by Prof. Dr. Hikmet Cicek and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Hakkı Korkmaz, who said that new generation compact protective coatings were created by combining smart materials with self-renewing/repairing materials in the right proportions. These coatings not only prevent damage to machine elements, but they can also self-repair or recover any damage that does happen. Using a biomimetic honeycomb design on MAX phase films and filling the honeycomb gaps with superelastic TiNi films is a first in the literature. The honeycomb design of MAX phase films allows them to stretch when subjected to shear stress, but the addition of superelastic TiNi films as a filler and because of their structure also allows the honeycomb structure to stretch up to a particular value. Their prediction was that the honeycomb-patterned compact coatings made of TiNi/MAX will extend the life of aerospace vehicles and cut down on maintenance expenses. This is particularly true for the portions of the vehicles that are subjected to friction and wear.
