he project titled " Determination of the Role of Astaxanthin in the Response Mechanism to Cadmium Stress in Beans at Physiological, Biochemical and Molecular Levels," led by Prof. Dr. Emre İlhan, a faculty member of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at our faculty , has been awarded funding under the TÜBİTAK 1002-A Scientific and Technological Research Projects Support Program.

This project focuses on a comprehensive and multi-dimensional investigation of the defense mechanisms developed by bean plants against cadmium stress, one of the negative consequences of heavy metal pollution on agricultural production. Accordingly, the aim is to evaluate biostimulant applications as an environmentally friendly, innovative, and strategic approach in agricultural systems to reduce damage caused by heavy metal stress, protect product quality, and ensure the sustainability of reliable food production. Within the scope of the study, the effect of astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant, on the stress response in plants will be analyzed at the physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels, aiming to reveal its potential role in reducing cadmium-induced cellular damage.

Commenting on the project, Prof. Dr. Emre İlhan stated that the study will examine in detail the oxidative damage caused by cadmium stress in plants, adding, “In this project, we are addressing the effect of astaxanthin on increasing plant stress tolerance in a multi-dimensional way. We aim for the findings to contribute to the development of heavy metal stress-resistant plant varieties and sustainable agricultural practices.”
