Dear students,
Photonics , a field shaping the future of science and technology, is a strategic discipline dealing with the production, manipulation, perception, and use of light in various technologies. Due to its strategic importance, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) encourages the establishment of this department. In Turkey, Photonics departments are only available at Izmir Institute of Technology and Gazi University. The Photonics Department established within the Faculty of Science at Erzurum Technical University is one of the pioneering programs aiming to train the highly qualified human resources that our country needs.
Today, photonic technologies are used in a very wide range of fields, from communications and defense to medicine, space technology, artificial intelligence-supported imaging systems, and quantum technologies. Fiber optic internet infrastructure, laser systems, biomedical imaging devices, solar panels, sensor technologies, and augmented reality applications are just a few examples of how photonics touch our daily lives.
Developments in fields such as quantum computing, optical communication systems, autonomous vehicle sensors, biophotonics applications, and defense technologies in the coming years will further increase the need for photonics experts. The World Economic Forum and many international technology reports emphasize that photonics and optical technologies are among the critical professions of the future.
Students in the Photonics Department at Erzurum Technical University will graduate with an interdisciplinary education encompassing physics, optics, laser technologies, electronics, materials science, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence-based image processing. This will enable graduates to:
- In defense industry organizations,
- In the telecommunications and communications sector,
- In healthcare technology and medical device companies,
- In the field of semiconductor and sensor technologies,
- In the energy and solar technologies sector,
- In R&D centers,
- In universities and research institutions
They will have job opportunities.
In line with Türkiye's technology-focused development goals, the need for experts trained in the field of photonics is increasing day by day. Therefore, the Photonics Department offers our students not only a profession but also a strong career opportunity that will enable them to have a say in the high-tech world of the future.
We invite our students to join us on this exciting scientific journey where they will shape the future with the power of light.
"The technologies of the future are shaped by light; and photonics is the key to that future."
