The course hours and contents of the English Preparatory Program are as follows

Writing: 4 Hours

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

To introduce students to the scope of writing as a profession, this course will explore the types and conventions of academic writing. 

OBJECTIVES: 

The overall objective is to develop students’ written expression of thought and provide learners with opportunities to explore ideas and build connections between content areas.  Written communication objectives for students completing the general education program are:

  1. Students will be able to demonstrate the capacity to use various writing forms, (for example, in-class responses, cause-effect essays, compare-contrast, reports, argumentative essays, research papers, and others) to achieve the specific purposes of the course.
  2. Students will be able to demonstrate exemplify ethical writing practices (i.e., avoid plagiarism, and use of an appropriate citation style) in all forms of written communication.
  3. Students will be able to demonstrate the capacity to effectively integrate multiple sources (primary and secondary, electronic and print) into the writing assignments of the course.
  4. Students will be able to demonstrate improvements in written expression of thought by utilizing various techniques (such as peer review, multiple drafts, or revisions of assignments after receiving feedback).

Reading: 4 Hours


Listening: 4 Hours

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course aims to improve students’ language skills by focusing on listening to English in both formal and informal settings. This will be accomplished through familiarization with vocabulary used in everyday life as well as the workspace. In addition, students will practice taking notes while listening for main points. Students will be expected to apply their progressing knowledge in the classroom while completing activities or interacting with one another.

OBJECTIVES:

The overall objective of this course is for students to further develop their English listening skills to effectively participate in an English-dominant environment.

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Distinguish facts from opinions.

  2. Take notes and listen for main ideas in English.

  3. Listen for reasons.

  4. Predict ideas from research.

  5. Listen for bias and support opinions.

  6. Listening for numbers.

Speaking: 4 Hours

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course aims to improve students’ language skills by focusing on production of speech in both formal and informal settings. This will be accomplished through familiarization with vocabulary and vernacular used in everyday life as well as the workspace. In addition, students will often be given scenarios in which they will engage in conversation with one another about diverse topics. Students will be expected to apply their progressing knowledge in the classroom while completing activities or interacting with one another.

OBJECTIVES:

The overall objective of this course is for students to further develop their English conversational skills to effectively express their ideas and thoughts in an English-dominant environment.

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Express opinions, ideas, and organize information for a presentation.

  2. Make suggestions and agree or disagree with specific ideas.

  3. Give additional or contrasting information.

  4. Link words to articulate cause and effect.

  5. Present a point and ask for or give clarification.

  6. Provide advice in English.

Main Course: 8 Hours

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course aims to improve students’ language skills by focusing on grammatical forms and structures in English. In addition to familiarizing students with basic terminology to talk about language, the course enables students to understand and analyze simple as well as more complex grammatical rules and structures. The course also expects students to apply their grammatical knowledge to their own use of English with a raised awareness of how language works.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this course, the students

  1. -will be able to distinguish between basic grammatical forms and structures,
  2. -will be able to apply grammatical rules to speech and writing,
  3. -will be able to generate and deepen ideas in English,
  4. -will be able to enhance their critical reading and writing abilities.
