Dear Students Newly Admitted to the Department of English Language and Literature,

Welcome to Erzurum Technical University.

Under the Erzurum Technical University School of Foreign Languages Directive on Preparatory Education and Examinations, students enrolled in programmes for which foreign-language preparatory education is compulsory are exempt from the preparatory programme if they meet at least one of the following conditions:

1. Passing the English Preparatory Programme Exemption Examination administered by the School of Foreign Languages.
   Students must achieve an overall score of at least 65 out of 100. The examination consists of two stages. Students must obtain at least 50 out of 100 in each stage and an overall weighted score of at least 65. The first stage accounts for 80% of the final score and assesses grammar, reading comprehension, listening and other language skills; the second stage accounts for 20% and assesses writing.

   According to the University’s 2026–2027 Academic Calendar, the English Preparatory Programme Exemption Examination will be held on 24–25 September 2026. Information regarding the examination venue, times and procedures will be announced separately by the School of Foreign Languages.

2. Obtaining at least 65 out of 100, or an equivalent score, in a national or international foreign-language examination recognised as equivalent by ÖSYM and assessing the core skills of reading, writing and listening.

   For English, the international examinations currently recognised by ÖSYM include Cambridge C2 Proficiency, Cambridge C1 Advanced, Cambridge Linguaskill General, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Oxford Test of English Advanced, and Oxford Test of English. The score obtained must correspond to at least 65 in YDS under the applicable ÖSYM equivalence table and must satisfy the language-skills requirement set out in the University Directive.

   The Electronic-Test of English Proficiency (e-TEP) administered by ÖSYM assesses reading, listening, speaking and writing. Under ÖSYM’s current e-TEP–YDS equivalence framework, an e-TEP score of 50 is equivalent to a YDS score of 65.

   YDS, e-YDS and YÖKDİL scores alone do not satisfy the requirement under this provision, as the University Directive requires an examination that assesses reading, writing and listening in combination. This restriction arises from the skills requirement in the ETÜ Directive rather than from whether an examination is national or international.

3. Having completed at least the final three years of secondary education in a country where the language of instruction specified for the programme is spoken as a native language or recognised as an official language, and having attended secondary schools in that country which are attended by its citizens.

4. Having previously and successfully completed a foreign-language preparatory programme at another higher education institution.

For national and international examination equivalencies and score requirements, students should consult the current ÖSYM foreign-language examination equivalence documents applicable on the date of their examination. Students are also advised to follow announcements issued by the Erzurum Technical University School of Foreign Languages for examination dates, venues, procedures and any additional requirements.
